It’s safe to say that the New Orleans Saints have not been as sharp over the past few years. One of the primary reasons for that is a lack of depth, along with some players not living up to expectations. This offseason, however, that may have changed. The Saints have gone from having one of the oldest rosters in the league, based on average age, to being in the top 10 for one of the youngest.
The depth being developed and added is young, and while those players will need to grow into their roles,
that’s an exciting development. The Saints are now betting on the future instead of simply hoping veterans can maintain past production. Iron sharpens iron.
Adding a player like Jeremiah Wright should push Cesar Ruiz to improve and if it doesn’t, Wright could elevate the offensive line himself. The same applies to Oscar Delp. He brings another weapon to the tight end room, adds flexibility to personnel groupings, and has the potential to develop into the team’s top tight end.
Jordyn Tyson won’t just make the wide receiver room better, he’ll also push the defensive backs to improve. Throughout training camp last year there were reports highlighting how well the DBs performed against the offense. However, the offense lacked explosiveness due to a shortage of weapons and an inability to disguise its intentions. That should not be the case this season.
This year’s training camp will be exciting to watch. The influx of young, talented players should not only energize the roster but also push everyone to get better.
