Confidence is one of the most valuable qualities a midfielder can possess, especially at a club like Bayern Munich, where every touch is scrutinized and every match carries enormous expectations. Bayern Munich midfielder Aleksandar Pavlović recently explained the mindset that allows him to thrive under that pressure.
“A good start always gives you confidence. But even if the first touches don’t come off, it doesn’t put me off my stride. I continue to play unperturbed and demand the ball just as I did
before. No matter who’s in front of me, how tight things are on the pitch or how much pressure there is: I have no fear. I’ve had this ability since I was a child and it’s getting stronger every year. I think that helps me enormously in my game. It’s a good gift,” Pavlović told Bayern Munich club magazine Säbener 51 (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
There is a subtle but important distinction in Pavlović’s words. His confidence is not dependent on everything going perfectly. Of course, a strong start helps any player settle into a match, but what separates top midfielders from the rest is their willingness to keep asking for the ball even after making a mistake.
That mentality is essential in Bayern Munich’s system. Midfielders are constantly receiving possession in crowded areas, often with little time to think and opponents closing in from every direction. The easiest response after a misplaced pass is to hide. Pavlović’s instinct is the exact opposite — he wants the ball again.
His comment about having “no fear” may be the most revealing. Fearlessness is not about never making mistakes; it is about refusing to let those mistakes dictate the next decision. That confidence allows him to play progressively, trust his instincts, and maintain composure regardless of the opponent or the occasion.
For a young player still establishing himself at one of Europe’s biggest clubs, that mentality could prove just as valuable as his technical ability. Talent can earn opportunities, but confidence, resilience, and the courage to keep demanding the ball are often what transform promising prospects into long-term stars.
Pavlović will undoubtedly be looking to rebound from a very disappointing World Cup show, but if he continues to pair that mindset with his obvious ability, Bayern Munich may have another midfield cornerstone for years to come.
