We are less than four weeks from Kentucky football’s season opener against Youngstown State.
With head coach Will Stein taking over the program, one of the hopes from the fanbase is for the offense to modernize and for their new leader to ultimately turn things around.
Kenny Minchey is pretty much solidified as Kentucky’s starting quarterback going into the season and should hold that title, barring any injuries.
It is football, though, where no one is completely safe from injury. So, if Minchey went
down at any point this season, who would be the answer as his backup?
That’s an interesting question.
If you ask the team at OurLads, JacQai Long is currently listed as QB2 for Big Blue. Wildcat Blue Nation agrees, listing Long as QB2 with Matt Ponatoski, Brennen Ward and Carson Cruver as depth at the position.
Long, who played at Marshall last season, played very sparingly over the course of five games. He completed just six passes out of 18 attempts but did carry the ball 15 times for 38 yards and a score — with his longest run going for 20 yards.
It’s clear that Long does not have a ton of experience, which leaves the door open for Ponatoski and Canadian product Cal Wither — two players who KSR’s Nick Roush believes could slide in as the backup QB for this year’s team.
In fact, offensive coordinator Joe Sloan had some nice praise of Wither following Saturday’s practice.
“You could see him (on film) just execute an offense at a high level and make a lot of throws, and the ball comes out quick. I thought he had a good day today,” said Sloan of Wither. “I thought this was his best day by far. So, he’s just got to keep building on it, go out and play, and just be the quarterback that he is.”
