The guy is having a rough week (some would say that’s every week for him, but we’ll leave that never-ending debate to the comment threads). So we’ll lead by telling you that the new Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports CM Punk vs. Roman Reigns remains the only match “locked in” for WrestleMania 42 next month.
What we’re specifically bringing up for conversation here is the usual blend of informed speculation and unconfirmed rumor that Dave Meltzer is often criticized for (see above parenthetical).
We’re still on the card for WWE’s second straight ‘Mania in Vegas, but here Meltzer’s just focused on plans for former UFC and WWE champ Brock Lesnar:
The Brock Lesnar direction for [WrestleMania*] is likely to be teased at the 2/23 Raw in Atlanta when he returns. There was a tease at the Royal Rumble of Oba Femi and after the Rumble we were only told that it was not a sure thing yet. We do know that in the lineup in late January for the show, that Lesnar was listed as facing LA Knight. But in the Rumble, nothing memorable was done in that direction while the Lesnar-Femi face-off was set up to get a big reaction and actually got the biggest reaction of the show except for Brie Bella.
One of the things WWE Unreal has shown us is that Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque and his creative team will write some wild stuff on a whiteboard when they’re spitballing ideas. An LA Knight/Brock Lesnar feud sounds like an example of that, especially considering there’s no history between them and only a little more than a month to the show. Even a hint they’re headed that way will likely get a strong negative reaction from fans convinced Haitch already has it out for Knight. It would also seem like an odd use of what could be one of Lesnar’s last matches.
Femi, on the other hand, could be a fun slobberknocker — and a chance to take a big step with The Ruler, who should play a big role in WWE’s future. And as Dave logically guesses, Oba getting the moment with Brock in last month’s Men’s Royal Rumble is a pretty big tell.
Anybody want to see a Triple H-booked LA Knight/Brock Lesnar match? How do you think a one-on-one with The Beast Incarnate would work out for Oba Femi?
Talk about that, and Monsieur Meltzer if you wish, in the comments below.
* Meltzer’s original says “Raw” here, but even in context that doesn’t make any sense and we’re 99.9% sure he meant ‘Mania. Just want to note it. Never said the criticism isn’t deserved, at least at times…
