The Cleveland Cavaliers haven’t had good injury luck so far this season. Missing All-Star point guard Darius Garland for 11 of the 14 games they’ve played has played a large role in that. He missed the beginning
of the season after recovering from a toe injury he sustained last spring. Garland returned for three games, but then missed the last few again after reaggravating his toe in Monday’s overtime loss to the Miami Heat.
Fortunately for Cleveland, the injury didn’t seem to be a serious setback, as head coach Kenny Atkinson said earlier last week that Garland’s injury was day-to-day and not week-to-week. Atkinson passed on more encouraging news before Saturday’s win over the Memphis Grizzlies.

“He was on the court yesterday,” Atkinson said. “[The on-court work] was with coaches, he did a pretty live workout where he’s going at it pretty good. He gets another shooting session today (Saturday). I was right there watching the workout. … He was moving pretty well, I’ll just put it that way.”
The next step will be having Garland return to five-on-five scrimmages.
“Again, it wasn’t five-on-five,” Atkinson said of Garland’s on-court work. “He’ll shoot again today (Saturday) and then we’re going to try to get him a run, like a five-on-five here pretty soon. So that’s kind of the progression, and then we’ll evaluate where he’s at after that.”
Garland has only played three games this season. He’s averaging 13 points, 5 assists, and 3 rebounds in 24 minutes per outing on .333/.368/1.000 shooting splits.
