More good injury news for the Detroit Lions. According to Fox 2 Detroit’s Dan Miller, cornerback Ennis Rakestraw—who left Thursday’s practice early—only has an ankle injury that is not considered serious. His status for Saturday afternoon’s preseason game is to be determined, per Miller.
It’s a relief for both Rakestraw and the Lions. During Thursday’s practice, Rakestraw went down on his own while shifting directions, and he had to hobble over to the sidelines on his own. After being tended to by
trainers for several minutes, he was able to walk off the field under his own power, albeit gingerly. Rakestraw has been in competition for both a starting outside cornerback and nickel job, and while his training camp got off to a rough start, he had just started to put together some strong practices.
The news is also good for the Lions because their cornerback room has been relatively thin since they decided to cut Terrion Arnold amidst his legal troubles. Right now, that room consists of projected starter D.J. Reed and Rock Ya-Sin, with Rakestraw, Nick Whiteside, Roger McCreary, rookie Keith Abney and Khalil Dorsey to round out the room.
With the Lions only having a walkthrough on Friday, the next time we’ll hear directly from the coaching staff is after Saturday’s preseason game against the Washington Commanders, which kicks off at 12 p.m. ET.
