Last season, new Los Angeles Rams defensive end Myles Garrett set an NFL record with 23 sacks during his final year with the Browns. It was a record that was destined to happen eventually, given how T.J. Watt nearly broke it a few seasons ago. With all that in mind, what’s an NFL record that you’re surprised hasn’t been broken yet?
First, let’s start with the most points scored by a team in a season. The Broncos hold the record for points scored, with 606 during their record-breaking 2013 campaign.
Within the last decade, only two teams have scored at least 560 points — the 2018 Chiefs (565) and the 2024 Lions (564) — but that’s the closest anyone has gotten to Denver.
Even in the 17-game era, which began with the 2021 season, it’s surprising how not even the passing touchdown mark has been approached. Peyton Manning holds that distinction with 55, set during Denver’s 2013 season.
Since the extra game was added, Matthew Stafford has the most touchdown passes in a season during that span, with his league-leading 46. Patrick Mahomes is the only other quarterback within the last decade to challenge Manning’s record, and he fell five short during his 2018 MVP campaign.
The passing yardage mark is much of the same story, with Manning again holding the record with 5,477 yards set in, you guessed it, ’13. This was the closest passing mark to being broken, as Tom Brady finished 161 yards shy with the Buccaneers in 2021, and Mahomes fell 227 yards short the following year.
Surprisingly, despite such a pass-happy league, we almost saw an all-time rushing record fall before a major passing mark. Rams icon Eric Dickerson nearly saw his NFL single-season rushing record fall twice since Adrian Peterson came up eight yards shy in 2012. Derrick Henry was 78 yards from Dickerson in 2020, and then Saquon Barkley was 100 yards away in 2024. Barkley did have a chance, yet was rested in the final week of the regular season.
There are several other notable records worth mentioning, but we want to hear from you! Turf Show Ramily, in the spirit of the Fourth of July, let’s start some fireworks in the comment section and let us know what NFL record you’re surprised hasn’t been broken yet. Or, what is the next major record that you expect to fall soon?
Stay safe this holiday weekend, and looking forward to your replies!
