The Dallas Cowboys spent the entire offseason saying Christian Parker would elevate communication on defense. That was his bread and butter. Jerry and Stephen Jones echoed that it was a leading reason they hired him.
On Sunday night, the Cowboys owner was left disappointed by how bad it looked against the New York Giants. Dallas needs to correct the communication issues soon, or else the season could go sideways fast.

Jerry Jones sounded very frustrated
looking back at how the Cowboys defense lost Week 1.
Jones was asked what bothered him more: The communication problems, or New York’s ability to win more up front?
“Communication,” Jones said. “The communication aspects of it. Just being out of position. Fundamentally between the two, communication…”
“I was taken back that the physicalness of it wasn’t more obvious. We had some guys play hard, and we had some guys do some good things on both sides of the ball, offense and defense. But I was really surprised and dismayed, as all fans were, that we couldn’t basically stop some of that outside stuff. I was frustrated that we didn’t get more out of our running game which would’ve helped us more in our passing game.”

Despite a down week, Brian Schottenheimer remains optimistic about who Christian Parker can become this year.
“I have no question Christian Parker is the right guy for this job,” Schottenheimer said. “He’s an outstanding coach. He will learn from this, just like our young players are going to learn from this. We’re going to play our young players this weekend too, and they’re going to play better and Christian’s going to call a better game this week and feel better about it. So experiences gained by making mistakes and unfortunately we made too many mistakes last night. That’s why we came up on the short end of the stick.”

The Cowboys leadership council has some heavy lifting to do this week.
“Do your job, and at the end of the day, communicate,” [Kenny] Clark added. “. … I don’t think it was a problem with the physicality. I think, up front, we really played the blocks well, and most of the guys, what we’ve been talking about, too, is finding ways to do more. We’ve got to just do more.”

Cowboys Cut Ties With Running Back to Make Room For Tyler Goodson Signing – Mike Moraitis, Cowboys on SI
To make room for one running back, the Cowboys had to release another one.
The Cowboys announced in the afternoon that they have waived veteran running back Israel Abanikanda off the 53-man roster, which allowed Goodson to be added. Abanikanda first signed with the Cowboys last November, when he was inked to a practice squad deal. Dallas brought him back on a futures deal in January.
The former fifth-round pick actually had a strong training camp and preseason with Dallas but ultimately failed to make the 53-man roster and was cut along with Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah. Abanikanda was then brought back on the practice squad.

The Dallas defense made Cam Skattebo look like John Riggins.
“Yeah, I don’t think it was a problem with the physicality,” defensive tackle Kenny Clark said. “I think up front we really played the blocks well. Most of the guys, what we’ve been talking about too is just finding ways to do more. We just got to do more.”

“I give them credit,” defensive tackle Jonathan Bullard said of the Giants. “They came out, they wanted a physical game. They did their job and we didn’t do ours to the max.”
