Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby is a highly lucky individual after a court ruling went in his favor on Monday morning. A judge in Texas granted Sorsby a temporary injunction that would allow him to play in 2026 despite placing more than 9,000 bets in 2022 when he was a member
of the Indiana Hoosiers. The judge issued a two-game suspension to Sorsby, which greatly undermines the permanent ban the NCAA placed on the former IU and Cincinnati QB.
There’s a strong likelihood that Sorsby will be playing this season — ESPN reported that Sorsby’s trial against the NCAA is set for Feb. 8, 2027, which is after the football season. The NCAA is expected to appeal the initial ruling, but even that process can take six months to a year. In short, the legal calendar is in Sorsby’s favor. Even if the outcome is reversed, it seems bound to be decided after the season.
If Sorsby ultimately plays for Texas Tech this season, many teams could opt not to play the Red Raiders. Georgia and Nebraska have already announced they won’t play Texas Tech in any sport. Other ramifications could include Big 12 teams opting not to play Texas Tech. While the Big 12 could decide to suspend Sorsby, that decision doesn’t appear to be imminent, and the noise surrounding this is only going to increase for the time being.
In this edition of SB Nation Reacts, we are asking if Sorsby should be allowed to play this fall. Vote below.
