Following Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich assistant coach Aaron Danks was asked how the mounting injury problems could affect the team’s preparations for Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Atlético Madrid.
With Serge Gnabry and Ismael Saibari both suffering injuries that Max Eberl described as somewhat serious, and Michael Olise also awaiting further examinations, Bayern could be without several important attacking options for the trip to Madrid.
However, Danks refused
to dwell on the absentees or allow the injury situation to become an excuse. Instead, he emphasized the quality and depth available within the squad, expressing confidence that other players would be ready to step up when called upon.
“I understand the question, but I also think it’s a very exciting game to go and play. We’ll have strength and depth in the squad, we’ll have other players that come into play for us, but it’s an exciting opportunity for us. We’re excited and we’ll attack the challenge and we’ll be ready on Tuesday,” Danks said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
It is an encouraging message from Danks, particularly given the uncertainty surrounding Bayern’s attacking personnel. Der Klassiker took a physical toll, but Bayern cannot afford to feel sorry for themselves with another massive European challenge just around the corner.
The injuries are undoubtedly concerning, but Bayern will have to find solutions with the players available. Atlético away is never an easy assignment, but Danks is making it clear that Bayern intend to embrace the challenge rather than fear it.
