The College Football Playoff Rankings were released Tuesday and BYU moved up one spot from 12 to 11 after the win over TCU. BYU is now 9-1 on the season with two games remaining. Other ranked Big 12 teams
include Texas Tech (6) and Utah (12).
BYU’s obvious path to make the CFP is to win the Big 12 title. To qualify as an at-large BYU would need some help since currently BYU would be the first team out. BYU will need to win its final two regular season games, have one of the teams ahead of them lose, and then hope a competitive loss to Texas Tech in the Big 12 title game would keep the Cougars in. SMU lost the ACC title game last season but still remained in the College Football Playoff field and were not leapfrogged by teams behind them. The CFP committee typically won’t punish a team for losing the conference championship game unless its a blowout loss or the team suffers a notable injury.
According to FanDuel odds, BYU has +250 odds to make the CFP and -325 odds to miss it, meaning oddsmakers have BYU more likely to miss the playoff.
