The Syracuse Orange men’s basketball season tips-off tonight against the New Haven Chargers. Game starts at 7:00 on ACCNX and here are our predictions for opening night:
Kevin: Syracuse 75, New Haven 64
I’m not sure what to expect in this one, but I feel pretty good that this Orange team can hit free throws. So, I’ve got a pretty tight game turning into a bit more comfortable final score thanks to players like Gavin Doty knocking down their free throws at the end. Without Aidan Tobiason, I think that Syracuse
will try to get the ball inside more and Luke Wilson, Amarri Monroe, and Sadiq White all hit double-figures in the opener.
Dom: Syracuse 80, New Haven 66
Lot of unknowns since Syracuse could potentially be without an important offensive player in Tobiason, but after a slow and concerning first few minutes, Syracuse goes on a scoring run by clamping down defensively and getting looks in transition. The strengths ultimately outweigh the weaknesses, and with solid performances across the board, the Orange get the job done. Sadiq White leads all players in scoring.
Max: Syracuse 81, New Haven 63
The Orange need to get to know each other some more in this game following their exhibition results, and this one is where they can do it quite well. Sadiq White should score heavily in this game, and many of the players could and should contribute in a big win to start the year for the first game under Gerry McNamara. People are looking forward to the start of a new era, and this is a place where it can start in dominant fashion.
Sam: Syracuse 71, New Haven 49
Gosh, I’m worried about where New Haven is getting shot creation at the NEC level (perhaps Kheni Briggs or Teshaud Steele has a big breakout, maybe it falls on the JUCO transfer backcourt of Danny Young and Tim Walker). I just don’t know how they’re scoring against Syracuse’s length and athleticism. It’ll look clunky for SU on offense, but they’ll do enough to make it a comfortable win.
Szuba: Syracuse 72, New Haven 56
Syracuse should button up on a bit on the defensive end now that the three exhibitions are out of the way. Doty should be able to score while Wilson and White should have an advantage inside — should White seek out interior play. Ultimately, Syracuse gets this one done on the defensive end and rebounding concerns are quelled for now against inferior talent, starting the McNamara campaign on the right foot.
