Following the Mets’ season-ending loss in Miami yesterday afternoon, Pete Alonso told reporters that he’d be opting out of his contract, a two-year, $54 million deal that included the opt-out after the first
season. Given the season he had at the plate in 2025, the news really comes as no surprise.
Over the course of 709 plate appearances, Alonso hit .272/.347/.524 with 38 home runs and a 141 wRC+. While even his worst seasons at the plate were still comfortably above league average, it was a return to form of sorts for Alonso, who had a 141 wRC+ in 2022 and a cumulative 137 wRC+ from the 2019 through 2022.
On top of hitting so well this year, Alonso played in all of the Mets’ 162 games, becoming the first player in franchise history to do so in back-to-back seasons. Durability has been a huge skill of his over the years, one that’s a relative rarity in the sport.
In the end, FanGraphs had Alonso at 3.6 fWAR, while Baseball-Reference totaled his value at 3.5 bWAR. Defense was an issue for Alonso, but he enters free agency looking much better than he did a year ago, and the Mets’ interest in bringing him back might be quite a bit stronger than it was at the end of last October.
