Newcastle United are locked into signing a new goalkeeper before next season, and they are weighing up a move for Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen as they look for a goalkeeper capable of stepping straight into the starting XI.
According to The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, the Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. stopper is one of the standout names on Newcastle’s shortlist, alongside other options.
Unlike some younger options, Verbruggen should be more of an immediate solution for the Magpies’ depth in net. The 23-year-old
already has over 100 senior appearances and has built a strong reputation in the Premier League since joining Brighton.
Newcastle’s interest is based on both performance and profile, according to Edwards. The pundit notes that Verbruggen’s command of his area, shot-stopping, and distribution have made him a key part of Brighton’s system and fit what Newcastle want in their next goalie.
The biggest challenge to completing a deal for the Brighton keeper is the sky-high price they have seemingly placed on their goalie, with Edwards reporting that they might seek up to £50 million in return for a sale.
Both Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale have struggled for consistency this season, and the club wants stronger competition for the No. 1 role, with Ramsdale set to leave after his loan deal is over and Pope in the declining phase of his career.
