Lane Johnson officially announced his retirement earlier this week … but his retirement is far from officially processed.
The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to keep Johnson on their 53-man roster for the remainder of the 2026 NFL season, as noted by BGN alumnus Jimmy Kempski.
It sounds like the team is holding out hope for the unlikely event that Johnson changes his mind and decides to return.
Moreover, there are financial implications to this decision. Over The Cap offered an in-depth breakdown on the impact
of Johnson’s retirement. The simplified explanation is that the Eagles prefer to spread out Johnson’s dead money between 2027 and 2028 as opposed to taking it on the chin now by placing him on the reserve/retired list.
The catch to this approach is that Johnson will count towards the Eagles’ roster limit. So, it’ll really be a 52-man roster for them the rest of the way. And then Johnson will also take up a spot that counts against the offseason 90-man roster until his retirement is processed after June 1, 2027.
