The 2026 MLB trade deadline is set for Monday, Aug. 3, at 6 p.m. ET.
For the Detroit Tigers, the deadline has been an item of contention, as the team just cannot seem to position itself for a legitimate run toward the playoffs. After a brutal May that saw the Olde English D win just six of its 28 games, it has been a struggle to gain significant ground in the wild card race.
Coming into Thursday, the Tigers are 4.5 games out of the final American League wild card slot, with four teams (Houston, Minnesota,
Seattle and Baltimore, respectively) ahead of them and Toronto just one game behind.
Most of the discussion surrounding Detroit’s deadline has focused on two-time Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal, whose services amount to a two-month rental (plus the postseason) if traded to another team. With Scott Boras representing him as well as some bad blood arising from the arbitration process, the Tigers seem extremely unlikely to resign him as a free agent, giving a sense of urgency in getting something of value before he departs the D.
Other names that have been tossed around include Casey Mize, Gleyber Torres and Jack Flaherty. The franchise has not given any solid indication of whether it plans to buy or sell, but some tough decisions are rapidly approaching for the top brass.
