If Jürgen Klopp is seeking a reason to take a closer look at Finn Dahmen as Germany’s next starting goalkeeper, his performance against Bayern Munich on Saturday should provide plenty of food for thought.
FC Augsburg held Bayern to a 2-2 draw, and while the visitors dominated possession and created plenty of opportunities, Dahmen and his teammates repeatedly frustrated the reigning Bundesliga champions. Bayern’s official match report highlighted several opportunities denied by Augsburg’s goalkeeper
as the hosts fought to preserve their advantage.

Dahmen was a major reason Augsburg left the match with a point rather than suffering a defeat against a Bayern side that spent much of the afternoon pushing for a winner. The 28-year-old helped anchor a disciplined defensive performance, making crucial interventions while Augsburg’s back line dealt with the relentless pressure from Michael Olise, Harry Kane, Luis Díaz, and company.
Of course, the result was not entirely down to Dahmen. Augsburg defended with commitment, and Bayern also made life difficult for themselves with missed chances and repeated offside calls. Nevertheless, the goalkeeper deserves considerable credit for helping his team withstand the pressure and keep the contest alive until the final whistle.
That brings us to the German national team.
Germany’s goalkeeping situation has become a major talking point following Manuel Neuer’s international retirement. Klopp has already indicated that he wants a closer look at Dahmen, describing him as a highly talented goalkeeper and expressing a desire to spend more time evaluating him. Marc-André ter Stegen was initially identified as Germany’s starting goalkeeper, but the competition for the position remains an important storyline.
Dahmen has a legitimate argument for receiving more opportunities. He has Bundesliga experience, has demonstrated that he can perform under pressure, and was part of Germany’s successful 2021 European Under-21 Championship squad. His performance against Bayern offered another reminder that he can hold his own against elite opposition.
That does not necessarily mean Dahmen should immediately leapfrog ter Stegen or Jonas Urbig in the pecking order. Establishing himself as Germany’s first choice requires consistency, command of the penalty area, distribution, and the ability to deliver across multiple matches, not just one standout afternoon.
Still, if Klopp wants his goalkeeping competition to be decided on performances rather than reputations alone, Dahmen has given him another compelling reason to keep an open mind.
Should Finn Dahmen receive a genuine opportunity to challenge for Germany’s starting goalkeeper role, or should the position remain a battle between ter Stegen and Urbig?
