Just over a week ago, reports emerged linking the Bucks to Denver Nuggets restricted free agent Peyton Watson. With Watson remaining unsigned, a potential move to Milwaukee is still very much a possibility.
Pursuing Watson is a no-brainer. A 6’8” wing known for his defensive chops, who’s also blossoming into an offensive force, Watson is undoubtedly a hot commodity that any team would be thrilled to have. After all, the NBA Finals have just reminded us how valuable rangy wings are—and you already know my stance on the value of forwards.
But pursuing Watson and getting him are two very different things; you don’t get a player like him without giving up something of value, no matter how much cap hell the Nuggets may be in. It’s the reason the Nuggets are reportedly looking for a Walker Kessler-like return in any sign-and-trade.
That said, the Bucks do have the capital needed to get a deal done. For one, they have the $25.5m trade exception created in the Giannis trade, a figure likely around what Watson would command. They also have draft picks to offer—though they should be cautious in parting with these. But the Nuggets, like the Bucks were with Giannis, are a win now team, and might be more inclined to facilitate a Watson to Milwaukee move if they received an established young player on a team-friendly contract who would fit in seamlessly with their existing core.
