Fernando Vargas Jr. isn’t here to play supporting role this weekend.
The son of former world champion Fernando Vargas will step into the brightest spotlight of his young career this weekend (Sat., Sept. 13, 2025), serving as the co-main event of the historic Canelo Alvarez
vs. Terence Crawford card inside Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. His opponent? Ireland’s Callum Walsh — the undefeated super Welterweight who has been handpicked and heavily promoted by UFC CEO Dana White.White has put his
full promotional weight behind Walsh, signing him to a long-term deal, showcasing him on UFC Fight Pass cards (like this), and pumping him up as boxing’s next breakout star.
But Vargas Jr. is ready to wreck the script.
Carrying both the pressure of his legendary last name and his own unbeaten record, Vargas Jr. views Saturday night as his chance to break out on the world stage — not as “Fernando’s kid,” but as a legitimate contender in his own right.
During Canelo vs. Crawford media day, Vargas Jr. sent a pointed message to General Entertainment Authority chairman Turki Alalshikh, promising this performance will put his name firmly on the map.
“Wait to see what I do before Canelo,” Vargas Jr. said. “I’m the co-main event, you’re gonna know why on this card, Turki. He knows about [Emiliano, my brother] but he’s going to know about me. You’re going to know about me after this one.”
For Vargas Jr., that means spoiling White’s grand plans for Walsh and turning the UFC-backed prospect into a stepping stone. And with millions of fans tuning in across the globe, the stakes couldn’t be higher.
Will the son of a Mexican boxing legend carve out his own legacy, or will White’s crossover boxing jewel keep shining?
Vargas Jr. enters the fight with a spotless 17-0 record (15 knockouts) as a +300 underdog.
