Setting the scene
It’s a Texas-sized showdown under the Friday Night Lights in Lubbock.
No. 13 Texas Tech and No. 23 Houston collide in a matchup with potential early-season Big 12 title stakes, and it’s one matchup both teams have circled all offseason.
For Texas Tech, it’s a chance to make a statement. While it’s only Week 2 and plenty can change, the Red Raiders currently do not feature a ranked opponent on their remaining schedule. Texas Tech is 2-0 but didn’t produce the results it hoped for in its first two weeks.
A Friday night ranked victory would change the complexion of September for Joey McGuire and the defending Big 12 champions.
For Houston, it’s an opportunity at revenge. The Cougars took many by surprise during last year’s breakout 10-3 campaign. But Texas Tech was the only team that truly had Houston’s number in 2025, defeating the Cougars 35-11 at TDECU Stadium.
Texas Tech and Houston each opened against Oregon State and an FCS opponent. Now the real test awaits in Lubbock for the programs’ Big 12 opener. Texas Tech has won all seven meetings since 2010, but Houston owns the longest road win streak in the FBS at six. One of those streaks is bound to snap Friday night.
Houston Cougars outlook
Houston is 2-0 for the second-straight season under Willie Fritz. The Cougars handled business as expected, ousting Oregon State 33-20 in the home opener before collecting its largest victory since 1989 in a 77-6 rout of FCS school Southern. Now Houston hits the road for the first time in 2026, looking to replicate its spotless road record from a year ago.
Texas Tech was Houston’s second Big 12 matchup last season, and the Cougars were still figuring out their offense under new coordinator Slade Nagel. The unit has taken plenty of strides since and also features tremendous continuity. Quarterback Conner Weigman — who missed the second half of last year’s meeting with a concussion — is playing the best football of his collegiate career. Albeit a limited sample size, the fifth-year senior is averaging 10.1 yards per attempt on a 69.0 completion percentage thus far, giving Houston’s offense more verticality than it had last season.
Weigman caught defenses off-guard with his mobility last year, reaching 80 rushing yards in six games and 110 three times. Houston hasn’t designed as many runs for the quarterback yet this season, but expect the Cougars to expand the playbook in this pivotal matchup with conference title stakes. Other players featured in the run game are Makhi Hughes and Re’Shaun Sanford II, who were limited in 2025 for different reasons. Hughes, a two-time 1,300-yard rusher at Tulane, was hidden on Oregon’s depth chart, while Sanford suffered a torn ACL. Both backs have been available and effective thus far, combining for 244 yards on a 6.1 average.
One luxury Houston has in this matchup is arguably the best wide receiver in the conference. Amare Thomas earned First Team All-Big 12 honors after ranking second in the league in receiving yards and touchdowns. And he looks even more dangerous to start 2026, shredding Oregon State’s defense with 133 yards and a touchdown — essentially sealing the Week 1 for Houston with a spectacular jump-ball catch on a critical third down.
Thomas had a monopoly on wide receiver production last year, and no other Cougar recorded more than 13 receptions. However, the room should be deeper in 2026 with the development of Koby Young (4 receptions, 101 yards, 2 TD) and the addition of Oregon State transfer Trent Walker. Tight end involvement will remain a focal point of the offense, and Patrick Overmyer has been Houston’s second-most targeted receiver thus far with eight catches for 100 yards.
Another reason why Houston might be even better offensively in 2026 is its line, which features three new transfers if right tackle Drew Terrill returns from his Week 1 injury. The Cougars handled Oregon State in trenches in a 533-yard performance, providing effective pass protection and paving the way for its ball carriers. Former Tulane guard Shadre Hurst was the Cougars’ golden portal acquisition this offseason, and he entered 2026 as a Preseason First Team AP All-American.
The Cougars’ defense has been a mixed bag so far. The near-immaculate results against Southern can largely be thrown away due to the FBS-FCS talent disparity. But against Oregon State, Houston’s secondary struggled with coverage and tackling. It was an opener, and it takes time to acclimate to contact. But the Cougars surrendered 376 passing yards to the Beavers, leaving consistent openings on intermediate throws. Houston returns All-Big 12 cornerback Will James and starting safeties Kentrell Webb and Jordan Allen to a veteran secondary. They’ll look to prevent the explosives after surrendering 345 passing yards to Texas Tech a year ago.
So far, Texas Tech is more run-oriented, and Houston has been highly effective at the line of scrimmage. Oregon State only managed 26 rushing yards on 25 attempts. Southern finished with -6 yards. The Cougars still haven’t yielded a 10-yard run all season, and that’s credit to a larger defensive line headlined by Oregon transfer defensive end Ashton Porter and defensive tackle Khalil Laufau. The Cougars have also been effective blitzers. Tulane transfer Javion White has notched two sacks from the nickel position, while Brandon Mack and Latreveon McCutchin have forced routine pressure on quarterbacks from the ‘jack’ outside linebacker position.
Texas Tech Red Raiders outlook
Texas Tech will have a target on its back every single game this season. The reigning Big 12 champions largely obliterated the competition last year en route to its first conference title since 1994. The Raiders won 12 games, and all 12 wins were by at least 22 points, including their 24-point road win at 10-3 Houston. Only national champion Indiana managed a greater point differential in 2025.
Texas Tech had become so accustomed to dominating that the concept of a close win seemed foreign. But that’s exactly what the Red Raiders dealt with Saturday night Corvallis, as they survived a near-upset at Oregon State. The Beavers led 24-21 with under seven minutes remaining before Texas Tech delivered a go-ahead 32-yard touchdown — its only 20+ yard pass of the contest. A controversial offensive pass interference on the Beavers ultimately silenced the upset bid, and the Red Raiders enter this high-stakes matchup at No. 13.
Will Hammond will earn the starting quarterback nod for Texas Tech, looking to unlock an offense which has not performed to its 2025 standard thus far. Hammond is less than 11 months removed from an ACL tear, and while mobility was a hallmark of his game last season, he hasn’t tested his legs in 2026. Last week, he was sacked on nearly half of his pressures as he continues to navigate his recovery. However, Hammond has been ultra-efficient as a passer. He owns a 76.7 completion rate through two games, although his throws have primarily been short to intermediate. But his perfectly-placed 32-yard home run ball to Coy Eakin in the end zone ultimately secured the win last Saturday in Corvallis.
Texas Tech may alternate quarterbacks for certain packages. Former Boston College and Florida State starter Thomas Castenallos made several appearances last week, rushing and throwing for one touchdown apiece in the win. Castellanos offers tremendous mobility for the position, recording over 1,110 yards and two touchdowns at Boston College in 2023.
The Red Raiders’ run game still features the tandem of J’Koby Williams and Cameron Dickey, who combined for 280 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns last October at Houston. Both backs were explosive as rushers and receivers last year, and Houston is well aware of their capabilities. Williams is fresh off an effective 116-yard rushing performance at Oregon State and currently leads the team in receptions. The offensive line play hasn’t been as sharp in run blocking as it was in 2025, but the unit is still comprised of all-conference selctions Sheridan Wilson and Howard Sampson.
Eakin and Pitt transfer Kenny Johnson are the primary names to monitor at wide receiver, with Malcolm Simmons and Micah Hudson in supporting roles. Stretching the field with these receivers is a priority considering Texas Tech has only completed five 20+ yard passes this year, after finishing fourth in the category with 63 in 2025. The Red Raiders could also return All-Big 12 tight end Terrance Carter, who could provide some mismatch opportunities after missing Week 2 with a foot injury.
Texas Tech fielded one of the most commanding defenses last season. Headlined by defensive coordinator Shiel Wood — who worked under Fritz at both Tulane and Houston — the defense allowed the third-fewest points and yards per game during its Big 12 title run. The unit lost four star defensive linemen, Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner Jacob Rodriguez, and safety Cole Wisniewski to the NFL Draft, and there have been growing pains with the new unit.
Oregon State racked up 417 passing yards on the Red Raiders. While Texas Tech is equipped with one of the top cornerbacks in the country in Brice Pollock, the Beavers succeeded heavily when targeting the non-Pollock portions of the field. Oregon State left points on the table too, as drops and overthrows to open receivers prevented several other touchdown opportunities. The Red Raiders will rely on cornerback Davin Martin and safety Brenden Jordan, who missed the first two games, to prevent such coverage busts again.
Texas Tech can also improve its passing defense by providing more pressure. The Red Raiders could debut potentially its top pass rusher in Trey White, who produced 19.5 sacks and 29 tackles for loss the last two seasons at San Diego State. He’ll line up alongside former Houston defensive tackle A.J. Holmes, a 2025 AP All-American selection looking to defeat his former team for the second-straight year.
Prediction
Both Houston and Texas Tech have been challenged already, needing all four quarters to take down Oregon State. This will be a step up in competition for both teams, however, and the playbooks will be fully emptied for this Friday night Big 12 opener.
Compared to last year’s meeting, Houston should have more success in the matchup between its offensive line and Texas Tech’s defensive line. The Cougars could not withstand the pressure last October, and that caused the offense’s early demise. This Houston offense is not only stronger up front, but Conner Weigman has grown as a passer and a runner, while Amare Thomas and the wide receiver room have taken a step forward.
Texas Tech looked far from the 2025 version of itself in the first two weeks, but the Red Raiders still trot out all-conference caliber talent at a bulk of positions, from its explosive running backs to its tight end and offensive line to a defensive line that is still learning how to gel together. The coverage issues should improve after a week of film study and adjustments.
The most exciting matchup to watch will be Amare Thomas vs. Brice Pollock, and the winner of that matchup will be a strong determinant of the result in Lubbock.
This one comes down to the wire, and the Red Raiders defend homefield advantage with a late field goal in a Friday night thriller.
