According to reports out of Belgium, Mike Penders (and Leandro Trossard) are set to miss Belgium’s game against Italy on Friday, with the pair getting left behind at their training center in Tubize while the rest of the squad flew out to Rome for the game.
Penders is said to be dealing with a quadriceps injury that he picked up in training. The extent of the injury is unknown, though the fact that he’s remained on international duty rather than returning to Chelsea is hopefully a good sign that it’s
just something minor — especially as the young goalkeeper could be in line for his senior international debut with Thibaut Courtoissss not even part of the squad due to injury as well.
The 21-year-old Penders was with Belgium at the World Cup as well but did not play a single minute. For Chelsea, he’s started both of our League Cup matches, and has done well enough to keep the pressure on the starter, Emi Martínez.
If Penders were to miss any time, either Gaga Slonina or Teddy Sharman-Lowe would have to step up into the backup role.
