Four teams make the Big East tournament.
At 6-4 in the league right now, Marquette is currently tied for fourth.
Marquette is tied for fourth with Georgetown, a team that beat MU for the first time since
2010 this past weekend. That is the only match this season between those two, and so the Hoyas are going to keep the tiebreaker all season long.
Marquette has now lost two straight Big East regular season matches for the first time since 2011. They haven’t lost three straight in the league since falling at Cincinnati, at Louisville, and home against Notre Dame towards the end of the 2009 season. Marquette hasn’t lost four straight in Big East play since a run of defeats in the middle of the 2008 season.
Marquette visits DePaul on Wednesday, and then goes out west to see #12 Creighton on Saturday. Odds are if they lose a third straight match, they’re going to lose a fourth straight one.
Don’t lose to DePaul.

Marquette is 46-29 all time against DePaul, but that’s a little misleading. MU went 2-4 against the Blue Demons before officially becoming a Division 1 program in 1986. So it’s 44-25 in Division 1 since 1986, and even that’s misleading. Marquette is currently on a 29 match winning streak against DePaul dating all the way back to the 2009 season. In fairness to DePaul, things are getting closer, and by closer, I mean the Blue Demons have won at least one set in four of the last seven meetings, including forcing things to five sets in Milwaukee last year.
DePaul has to head out to Creighton on Friday night, so this match would be a great way for them to avoid three straight losses not to mention five losses in a six match stretch. On top of that, DePaul is tied with UConn just one game behind 6-4 Marquette & Georgetown, so the Blue Demons can absolutely do themselves a favor as far as the postseason goes with a win here.
Kendall Timme leads the way for the DePaul offense with 3.40 kills per set. She’s only hitting .211 on the season, and that’s down to just .194 in Big East contests even though her kills average is up to 3.56/set. The Blue Demons have gotten a boost in the last few weeks from freshman Isabela Tavares Salomon, who has only played in 22 sets this season, all in October. She’s hitting .256 and recording 3.18 kills/set, although both Villanova and Georgetown held her under .200 last weekend. Salomon did not play against Marquette in the first meeting where Timme led the Blue Demons with 12 kills on .150 hitting, so we’ll see how the Golden Eagles adapt to the change.
Marquette had trouble avoiding blocks last weekend, which could be a problem against DePaul. Jade Dudley-Epps and Katelynn Oxley are both averaging better than a block per set this season, and Oxley’s 6’4” frame provides a natural barrier to success at the net for opponents.
Big East Match #12: at #12 Creighton Bluejays

Bluesky Updates: @AnonymousEagle, but only if it’s actually possible for me to watch on NPM, and I’m pretty sure it’s not.
Marquette is 7-31 all time against Creighton. The Bluejays’ run in the series is at five straight victories. The Golden Eagles haven’t won in Omaha since the timeshifted 2020 season, in February 2021.
I’ll say it if no one else will: Marquette can not let Ava Martin run wild again in this match. In Milwaukee back on October 2nd, the Big East Preseason Player of the Year had a match high 20 kills in just three sets while hitting .514. MU had their own problems that didn’t help all that much in that match, but you can’t let the presumptive postseason POY rip you in half like that, either. The Bluejays also got .500 hitting from both Jaya Johnson and Kiara Reinhardt, and even setter Annalea Maeder got into the action at exactly .500 hitting on limited attempts.
Maybe MU comes up with a way to limit Martin. That still leaves the Bluejays with enough options on the offensive side of things to be able to weather a storm from the Golden Eagles.
On top of the offense that she provides — 2.55 kills/set on .439 hitting — Kiara Reinhardt is one of the better blockers in the Big East. The Cedarburg, Wisconsin, native is averaging 1.11 blocks/set this season, and believe it or not, that’s actually down from last year’s 1.48/set.
