Welcome to the Morning Commute
Today we are talking about Mizzou Football!
Following a disappointing loss to Vanderbilt — that resulted in the injury of quarterback Beau Pribula — the Tigers season has a very different outlook. Lots
of questions have flown into the conversation revolving around who the starting quarterback will be next season and maybe even who the coach will be next season.
Freshman Matt Zollers looked great under center for Mizzou and if he’s able to keep it up as the season finishes, he’s got a serious shot at the starting spot next season. If the spot is belongs to Zollers, I’d expect Pribula to transfer. Super interesting to think about.
On the other hand, with so many vacant coaching positions, Drinkwitz’s name has also been getting thrown around as a potential candidate for a job switch.
Immediate discussions rise as Mizzou is faced with its second loss of the season. Only time will tell what happens next.
We have more discussion on football and basketball, diving into prospects, visits and PFF grades in the Rock M+ forums. Most recently, we’re getting to know our subscribers in the basketball forums.

After the loss to Vanderbilt, Mizzou fell four spots to No. 19 in the latest AP Top 25 poll. Texas A&M stayed at No. 3 after their 49-25 road win over LSU. At 8-0, the Aggies are one of six undefeated teams remaining in the country and are also on their bye this week.
Going to be a tough matchup at Memorial Stadium for the Tigers following the bye… Also a chance at redemption.
Anthony Robinson II should be considered the fire-starter. He plays with a fiery intensity, and is the best on ball defender in the conference.
Robinson is easily one of the players I am most excited to watch this season. He’s going to be a key to whether the Tigers’ season is a success or not.
It would be one thing if Mizzou waltzed into Vanderbilt and lost fair and square, sure. That would’ve sucked. But to dominate time of possession? Offensive ground? Success rates? And then to lose your starting quarterback and tight end… and still come up one inch short? That’s pain. That’s pain that no amount of opioids can fix (not that you should ever try, I must say).
Pain.
Look, I think everyone got a little starry eyed when Ahmad Hardy was able to rack up multi 100-yard rushing games in the first five weeks, including against kansas and South Carolina. And I think Beau Pribula’s consecutive completions record, plus his first few starts, led a lot of the fan base to believe that he was a clear cut upgrade over Brady Cook, to the point that Mizzou could actually find a spot in the Playoff.
I, along with most people, thought this was going to continue into the SEC but ultimately it hasn’t formulated yet. There’s still time left, but it’s running out.
Across 12 games this year, Matias-Lopez (who I’ve been casually calling ZML) has racked up 196 digs. In the win against Auburn, she set a new collegiate career-high with 22.
ZML is going to be legit for years to come. Check out Dylan’s feature!
Kentucky won the sweepstakes for Jayden Quaintance, the freakishly athletic young forward who is still just figuring out how good he can really be. JQ is still dealing with the recovery of an ACL tear, and losing any development time isn’t a good thing, but he’s listed at 6’10 and a half but he sports a 7’5” wingspan and was already a defensive menace for Arizona State last year. Playing basketball looks effortless for him, so if he’s able to acclimate quickly he’ll be a gigantic boost.
Expected to be a first-round draft pick this season, Quaintance is going to a force to be reckoned with this season. Definitely a name to keep an eye on!
Mizzou finished 3-30 from beyond-the-arc. By comparison, Maryville finished 12-34 on three-point attempts. While the Tigers did a good job getting to the line at the opening and conclusion of the game, they struggled during the middle part with four free throws in the second/third quarters.
3-for-30? Yikes. Kellie Harper definitely has some things to address.
Over at Rock M+ we have more Mizzou football discussion in forums ahead of the bye week, and basketball discussion ahead of the season.
