The Texas Rangers have activated pitcher Chris Martin from the 15 day injured list and designated him for assignment, the team announced today. With this move, the Rangers’ 40 man roster now stands at 39.
Martin, 40, was expected to retire after the 2025 season, but ended up returning to the Rangers for the 2026 season on a one year, $4 million deal. Unfortunately, he has been neither good nor healthy this season, putting up a 9.00 ERA in 14 innings over 16 games while landing on the injured list
three times.
Since going on the injured list in mid-July, Martin has made six rehab appearances for the Round Rock Express, the most recent being a one batter appearance on the second of back to back days on Saturday. I had assumed that he would be activated after that and returned to the active roster. Instead, his time with the Rangers is apparently done.
The timing on this is odd, but my guess is that the Rangers are doing this now to see if they can trade Martin and save some of the roughly $1.2 million he’s owed the rest of the season.
