Dayot Upamecano’s unresolved contract situation with Bayern Munich has been a long, ongoing saga. Initial talks were positive and indicated a quick resolution to extend his contract beyond 2026, but then it became apparent both sides were far apart in terms of wages, signing bonuses and release clause. This difference has seen talks drag on dramatically, with the Frenchman having entered the last six months of his contract at the time of writing.
On January 4th, Sky Sport reporter Florian Plettenberg
reported that a new meeting had taken place without any progress.
However, on January 5th, Florian Plettenberg reported that Bayern are pushing to finally seal a contract extension soon:
Crucial days lie ahead as FC Bayern are pushing to finalise the contract extension with Dayot #Upamecano, also to ensure planning security and maintain calm within the club. Bayern with Eberl/Freund/Dreesen are very confident that Upamecano will extend his contract. An exit option/release clause is very likely to be included in the new deal.
The contrasting reports, one day after another, open up reason to doubt these reports. But this is the time for Bayern to push for talks to finally be completed. Making concessions to speed things along at this time would not be a surprising course of action. Whether this is true or not will likely be determined in the coming days.
