Newcastle United has been assessing center-back options ahead of future transfer windows, with a younger defender already identified as one of the club’s recruitment priorities as Fabian Schar and Dan Burn get closer to the end of their careers.
According to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, Newcastle has been contacted by intermediaries over the availability of AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori. Milan is prepared to do business on the 28-year-old in January rather than risk losing him for nothing when his
contract expires next summer.
“Intermediaries have spoken to a host of clubs about the availability of the former Chelsea pair, with Tottenham, Newcastle, Everton, Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, Sunderland and Fulham all contacted,” Bailey reported.
Tomori has yet to feature for Milan this season and has entered the final six months of his contract without talks taking place over an extension.
“We understand Milan are willing to do business on both players as they look to create space in their squad and give themselves greater room for manoeuvre in the January market,” Bailey reported, referring to Tomori and fellow England international Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
A permanent transfer, however, is not the only possibility. Bailey added that Milan could also consider an initial loan agreement as the club attempts to reshape its squad midway through the campaign.
Tomori would bring substantial experience from both Serie A and Premier League play, having previously played for Chelsea before establishing himself at Milan. All that said, the report does not establish that Newcastle has opened negotiations or decided to pursue Tomori. For now, this news just confirms that the Magpies have been made aware of his availability as January approaches, in case the team needs reinforcements.
Would Tomori be a smart short-term addition to Newcastle’s defense, or should the club stick to its plan of signing a younger center-back? Share your thoughts in the comments.
