Newcastle United could face another decision over one of its longest-serving players before the Sept. 1 transfer deadline, with the Magpies still balancing potential departures against the need to maintain some experience and depth in Matthias Jaissle’s rebuilt squad.
Winger Jacob Murphy emerged as a possible departure earlier this summer, and he’s been linked to a late-window exit once again.
The Athletic previously reported that Newcastle “may listen to offers” for the 31-year-old, who is entering
the final year of his contract, although his strong preseason and standing within the squad appeared to leave his immediate future uncertain.
Now, according to The Telegraph’s John Percy, an entirely new potential destination has emerged for Murphy. Percy reported on Monday that Nottingham Forest has identified the veteran Magpie as one of three options to strengthen the right flank before the transfer window closes.
“(Nott Forest manager Oliver) Glasner wants more competition at right wing-back after introducing a back-three defensive formation and holds interest in Newcastle’s Jacob Murphy, who is one of three players under consideration,” Percy reported.
Forest’s interest comes after Glasner, new at the helm this season, switched the team’s formation. Percy reported that Murphy is one of three players currently being considered for that role, although the other two names were not revealed.
Murphy would certainly provide proven Premier League experience, with the winger having spent almost a decade at Newcastle while producing arguably his finest campaign under Eddie Howe in 2024-25, finishing with eight goals and 12 assists in the Premier League.
His situation, however, presents Newcastle with a difficult decision. Murphy can leave for nothing when his contract expires next summer, providing a financial incentive to sell now, particularly if Forest turns its interest into an acceptable offer. On the other hand, Newcastle has already lost significant experience and leadership this summer through the departures of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier, while Joe Willock could soon join Besiktas.
Murphy also wore the captain’s armband during preseason and remains the lone established option behind Anthony Elanga on the right, with no natural alternative present in the Magpies’ first team.
Percy, however, did not report that Forest has submitted an offer, and Murphy is only one of three candidates currently under consideration. Still, Newcastle’s apparent willingness to listen to proposals combined with Forest’s concrete search for a right wing-back makes his situation another one to watch during the final days of the window.
