After the Kansas City Chiefs
’ 33-30 overtime win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday evening, head coach Andy Reid faced local media Monday to answer questions.During his livestreamed press conference, Reid hit on a few significant storylines in Chiefs Kingdom, starting with the left tackle who hasn’t seen the field yet this season.
1. Josh Simmons could be out a few more weeks
“He’s doing everything,” Reid described starting left tackle Josh Simmons (Back). “He’s working his tail off.
“We knew it would be a couple of, two, three or four games
in here as long as he was making progress,“ Reid continued. ”We’ll just see where he’s at; he’s kind of in that ‘flex’ area there to see exactly if it’s calmed down, if some of the swelling as gone down but we’ll see.”
In his place, rookie left tackle Kahlil Benson has filled in admirably. It’s also worth sharing that Reid had no further update on safety Chamarri Conner (Knee), who has also not practiced through two weeks of practices.
2. Kahlil Benson did ‘a pretty good job’
“I saw some good things,” Reid said. “He had a couple of hiccups there; mostly it was just the scheme, just adjusting to the scheme more than the one-on-one blocking part of it.
“Overall, he did a pretty good job, I thought, Reid finished. “Solid.”
Immediately after the game, Reid shared that he believes Benson is “winning over a lot of people.”
3. Mansoor Delane
“It wasn’t coming around as fast as we wanted,” Reid said of rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane’s shoulder injury; he was questionable to play, dressed, but didn’t record a snap against Indianapolis.
“He was right on the border there of ‘alright, you can get in there and play a full game,’ or, if we can, get it to calm down a little bit more and maybe he’s better this week. It was a tweener’s position to be in, but he wanted to suit up and, if needed, he could’ve gone in, but we’re trying to keep him out of playing a full game in there for sure.”
4. Anticipating more of what Tyquan Thornton did in Week 2
“Tyquan had a real good training camp,” Reid said after Thornton’s performance of four catches for 86 yards. “I think he has just carried that over into this.
“I would anticipate that he would continue to make the same plays or have the same opportunities that he had yesterday,” Reid elaborated. “But you never know in these games who is going to have the opportunities and who’s not, but he is well deserving of what he got, and then he took advantage of it by making the play.
“A couple of those are tough catches, and he did a great job with it; I’m sure he’s probably a little sore this morning; he took a couple of shots in there.”
5. The one-two punch is blossoming in the backfield
Reid talked about the Chiefs’ backfield situation, which hasn’t looked as split as it could as the season moves forward. He commented on allowing rookie Emmett Johnson to grow with time.
“I think Emmett will continue to get more snaps, and that will take a little bit of the load off [Kenneth Walker],” Reid said. “He wants the ball, he wants the ball every play, Ken does, and he’s not asking to be relieved or anything else. I think as it goes on, you get a nice balance with those two in there, and it keeps them more fresh as the season goes on.”
