Despite the questions that have surrounded Manuel Neuer’s future and whether the legendary goalkeeper is approaching the end of his career, Uli Hoeneß remains firmly convinced that Neuer can still make a major contribution to Bayern Munich.
The FC Bayern supervisory board member offered an emphatic endorsement of the 40-year-old goalkeeper, pointing not only to his ability between the posts but also to the qualities he brings to the dressing room.
“Manuel is still one of the very best. He is absolutely
world-class. He can still contribute a lot to the team over the next year. Manuel has everything you could want in terms of character. He is also a role model for the younger players. He is ambitious, and he remains incredibly important to the team,” Hoeneß told Sport Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
It is a strong statement from Hoeneß, particularly given the debate that has developed around Neuer in recent months.
There is no question that Neuer is in the latter stages of an extraordinary career. However, Hoeneß believes that his value to Bayern Munich extends beyond his performances on the pitch.
His experience, leadership and mentality remain important assets for a squad that is increasingly blending established veterans with younger players. For emerging goalkeepers and outfield players alike, having someone with Neuer’s experience around the team provides an opportunity to learn from one of the greatest goalkeepers in football history.
The question, of course, is whether Neuer can continue performing at the level Hoeneß believes he is capable of reaching. If he can, Bayern Munich could benefit from another season with one of its most influential leaders between the posts. If he can’t, Jonas Urbig is waiting in the wings.
Hoeneß’s message is clear, though — write Manuel Neuer off at your own risk. As far as one of Bayern Munich’s most influential figures is concerned, Neuer is still world-class, still ambitious and still has an important role to play.
