The scuttlebutt after the Lewis Family decided to ouster Daniel Levy from his position of Chairman of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club was that Spurs would finally break their existing wage structure to offer more compelling wages to prospective football players. Well, it sure sounds like we’re getting that. According to the Chronicle, a regional paper based in Newcastle, Toon midfielder Sandro Tonali would earn £275k/wk. in wages should he complete a transfer from Newcastle United to Tottenham.
That
would make Tonali Spurs’ highest wage earner at the club, surpassing the (supposed) £200k/wk wages earned by January signing Conor Gallagher, though Gallagher’s wages apparently contain a number of performance-based and appearance-based escalators. And of course, Tonali’s agent is expected to get a cut of the transfer fee as well.
The likely exit of Tonali has similarities to Alexander Isak’s long-drawn move to Liverpool for £125m, although the ex-AC Milan midfielder has so far not kicked up a fuss with the transfer drama, agent-driven, according to sources close to the deal.
Chronicle Live understands that Tonali’s agency, GR Sports, will net 10 per cent of the transfer sale, with Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi having strong links with Tonali’s representatives.
Other than that there’s not a whole lot that’s new here – the Chronicle restates that Newcastle are publicly saying it would cost £100m to pry him out of Tyneside and to London, but there are suggestions that a bid of £85m would be enough. That’s still a ton of money for Tonali, especially if you factor in his wages, which, let’s be fair, are probably the main reason why he’s supposedly favoring us and not Manchester City.
City, however, are still in the frame, and that could be why there hasn’t been a lot of movement on this transfer over the last couple of days. We’ll see. Spurs are also looking at players such as West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes and Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Warton.
