The Kentucky Wildcats have pulled off a shocking move to find their first quarterback of the Will Stein era, and it comes in the form of former Notre Dame signal-caller Kenny Minchey.
Late Monday night, news broke that Minchey had signed with Kentucky after originally committing to the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
This marks the first flip under Stein, and boy, is it a big one.
The 6-foot-2, 208-pound Minchey is a redshirt sophomore with two years of eligibility left. This past season, he was in a close competition
with CJ Carr for the Notre Dame starting job before Carr ultimately won it and had a fantastic season.
In six game appearances this season, Minchey completed 20/26 passing for 196 yards and rushed for 84 yards and a touchdown. ESPN has him ranked ninth among transfer portal QBs, and On3 has him ranked 10th among QBs and 60th overall.
While this means Kentucky will almost certainly miss out on Arizona State QB Sam Leavitt, it was becoming clear that LSU is the favorite there. And that’s before Oregon becomes a major player once Dante Moore declares for the NFL Draft, as expected, since he’s a projected top-five pick.
Instead of waiting to get burned, Stein stuck with someone he could get now while sending a signal to the college football world that he’s not to be underestimated on the recruiting trail.
