Number eight ranked TCU Women’s Basketball started off their Big 12 title defense with a 77-55 win over Kansas State last Saturday. The Frogs went undefeated in non-conference play and moved to 13-0 on the season
with the win over the Wildcats. Kansas State has struggled to start the 2025 season, falling to 7-7 with the loss, but the Wildcats are a solid program and TCU handled business against an inferior opponent. TCU has won all 13 of its games by at least double digit points as the Frogs have had very few hiccups to start the season.
Olivia Miles had the highest scoring game of her Horned Frog career against Kansas State as she tallied 29 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Miles continued her efficient style of play, making 11 of 18 shots from the field, good for a shooting percentage of 61.1%. Miles does a superb job of scoring without overplaying her role in the offense and keeping her teammates involved. Clara Silva took full advantage of a few good passes from Miles on her way to double-double with 14 points, ten rebounds, and three assists. Silva was very impactful on the defensive end as well with four blocks and a steal while committing just two personal fouls in 29 minutes of action. Silva has looked more comfortable on offense in the past few games as this was her third straight game with double digit points. Silva developing into a consistent paint scorer raises the ceiling on an already potent TCU offense. Marta Suarez reached 20 points for the sixth time as a Horned Frog to go along with eight rebounds and two assists. Suarez’s three point shot has turned into a real weapon for the Frogs as she knocked down three of seven attempts from deep against the Wildcats.
The TCU defense had yet another impressive outing, holding the Wildcats to just 33% shooting from the field and 17% shooting from the field. It was a well rounded defensive performance from the Frogs, holding the Wildcats to just 26 points in the paint, compared to 44 points in the paint by TCU, and just eight fastbreak points. Despite the offensive firepower of the Frogs, the TCU defense is arguably the strength of the team as they have let up 60 points in a game just once all season. The Frogs lead the nation in field goal percentage by their opponents as opposing teams are shooting just 29.7% from the field against TCU. TCU perimeter defenders do a solid job of staying in front of opposing ball handlers and funneling drivers to their very capable rim protectors. Another category in which TCU ranks near the top is assists per game as the Frogs average 21.5 assists as a team, good for sixth in the nation. Five players tallied at least three assists for TCU against Kansas State as the Frogs did a great job of moving the ball. The Horned Frogs consistently shoot efficiently from the field, ranking tenth in the nation in field goal percentage as a team, and the game against Kansas State was no different as they knocked down 51% of their attempts from the field. One thing to improve on for TCU would be taking better care of the basketball and limiting turnovers. The Frogs tallied 15 turnovers as a team but played a very clean game outside of that.
The Frogs will return to action on New Year’s Eve on the road in Provo, Utah as they will take on BYU at 8:00 pm. This game will be a good test for the Frogs as the Cougars are off to a 12-1 start to the season with their only loss coming at the hands of number 12 ranked Vanderbilt. BYU is 1-0 in Big 12 play after a comfortable win on the road over UCF in their last game.
