Bayern Munich dominated just about every statistical category in their 2-2 draw with FC Augsburg, but the scoreboard told a very different story. Vincent Kompany’s side controlled possession, generated a mountain of chances, and consistently threatened in the final third.
Unfortunately for Bayern Munich, individual mistakes and wasteful finishing helped turn a match they had every opportunity to win into a frustrating dropped-points afternoon.
The numbers paint a picture of Bayern Munich’s overwhelming attacking superiority. They enjoyed 70% possession, recorded 29 shots to Augsburg’s 12, and put 10 attempts on target compared to the hosts’ five. FC Bayern also registered 5.02 expected goals (xG), more than double Augsburg’s 2.37, while completing 583 accurate passes at a 90% success rate. Augsburg managed just 214 accurate passes at 75%.
Bayern Munich also had 63 touches in the opposition penalty area, nearly three times FC Augsburg’s 24, and won nine corners to the home side’s five. By almost every measure, Bayern Munich created enough opportunities to leave Augsburg with all three points.
Yet, the visitors made life far more difficult for themselves than necessary.
Manuel Neuer’s costly early mistake handed Augsburg an opportunity to take control of the match, setting the tone for an afternoon in which Bayern Munich repeatedly had to overcome their own errors. Even with their considerable attacking advantage, the Bavarians could not translate their dominance into a comfortable result.
The finishing statistics make the frustration even clearer. FC Bayern created six big chances but missed four of them. FC Augsburg, meanwhile, created three big chances and missed just one. That difference in efficiency proved crucial, especially when Bayern had so much of the ball and so many opportunities to put the game beyond reach.
The foul count offered another indication of how the match unfolded. FC Augsburg committed 10 fouls to Bayern’s six, while the hosts were caught offside only once compared to Bayern’s four. Despite spending much of the game defending, Augsburg found ways to disrupt Bayern Munich’s rhythm and capitalize on their opportunities.
Ultimately, this was a match Bayern Munich should have won. The possession, shot volume, expected goals, and territorial dominance all pointed toward a victory. Instead, mistakes at one end and missed opportunities at the other left Kompany’s side settling for a 2-2 draw.
Bayern Munich did more than enough to win the statistical battle. They simply failed to do enough to win the football match.
