The sporting world is a funny place. Just days ago this writer covered the story that Manuel Neuer was speaking about his affinity for his former club FC Schalke. The Bayern Munich legend still has a clear appreciation for his boyhood club and there has been speculation in the past whether or not the goalkeeper might have interest in returning to Gelsenkirchen. Until now though, it was merely speculation.
That has now changed as recent reports might cause a serious development in this story. According
to reports from Bild, there is real interest in Schalke acquiring Neuer’s talents once again. “As a club, we can be proud of his career. His departure was controversial, but I personally think that everyone can make mistakes, especially when they are young. That’s a good thing at some point. […] He will first enjoy his time and then consider what he wants to do. Whether he wants to work in his old or new home – that’s something he has to decide for himself,” supervisory board chairman Axel Hefer told Bild.
While it appears as though Neuer’s role with the club would be purely outside of a goalkeeping role after this playing career. The chairman added that it is interesting to involve former players because of their qualifications and passion.
It would certainly be an interesting proposal for the goalkeeper but where would his allegiances stand at this point? It appears the Schalke fans have no love for Neuer after his departure from the club was seen in Gelsenkirchen as a betrayal for money and titles. Perhaps they would re-open their hearts though should he come home. Then again, maybe not.
