West Ham United ended their six-game winless run with a 3–1 comeback victory over Newcastle United at the London Stadium, leaving Eddie Howe’s side without an away win since April.
The game began at a furious
pace, and the Magpies made the most of it.
Jarrod Bowen struck the post inside four minutes before Newcastle countered immediately, racing upfield for Jacob Murphy to cut inside and finish across Alphonse Areola from the edge of the area.
West Ham nearly leveled soon after when Bowen was tripped by Malick Thiaw in the box, but VAR overturned the penalty after replays showed the Newcastle defender had nicked the ball first.
Lucas Paqueta equalized in the 37th minute when a low drive from the edge of the area beat Nick Pope too easily at the near post.
The home side completed the turnaround just before halftime. Aaron Wan-Bissaka surged past Dan Burn down the right and whipped in a cross that Sven Botman, sliding to intercept, diverted into his own net.
Newcastle’s poor away form continued to show as they struggled to recover after the break.
West Ham, boosted by a loud home crowd, stayed composed and hit Newcastle on the counter. Bowen remained a constant threat while debutant Freddie Potts impressed in midfield, combining neatly with Paqueta.
Substitute Tomas Soucek sealed the result in stoppage time, stretching to poke home after Bowen’s burst down the right.
Newcastle offered little attacking threat after halftime despite the introductions of Fabian Schar, Harvey Barnes, and William Osula.
Anthony Gordon and Nick Woltemade were kept quiet as Howe’s side fell to their eighth straight Premier League away match without victory.
Newcastle remain mid-table with growing concerns over their travel performances ahead of next weekend’s fixture against Bournemouth in another Premier League matchup after their return to Champions League action next Wednesday, back home against Athletic Bilbao.
