Aitana Bonmati made her long-awaited return from injury on Sunday as Barcelona Femeni beat Bayern Munich to reach a sixth straight Women’s Champions League final.
The three-time Ballon d’Or winner spoke after the game and tried to put into words just how special Pere Romeu’s side are.
“I am really happy for the team,” she said. “They have had a spectacular season and all that is left is to put the cherry on top of the cake.
“Six finals in a row is crazy. I think we have normalised something that is absolutely
not normal. It says everything about the ambition and character of this team.
“Players and seasons come and go, but we’re still there, keeping the bar high and always wanting to be in the Champions League final.”
Barca now go on to play OL Lyonnes in the final on May 23rd in what promises to be a tough game, but Aitana is feeling confident.
“There is not much I can say about Lyonnes to be honest,” Bonmatí said. “They are Champions League history. They have a great side.
“For me, they are always the team to beat and the team we looked to when we were nothing and wanted to reach their level, which we achieved. But they are still a top team as well. We are only thinking about beating Lyon and winning that trophy.”
This will be the fourth time that Barca have played OL Lyonnes in the final. The French side won in 2019 and 2022 but Barca gained their revenge in 2024.
