Good morning, Chargers fans!
Since the injury to starting center Tyler Biadasz, Jake Slaughter has 100 percent moved to center which took one of the top two candidates out of the battle for the left guard spot. Veteran Kayode Awosika is now the front-runner and would likely be the starter if the team played tomorrow, but the team needs to keep reinforcing depth and preparing for any potential future injuries.
That’s why Trey Pipkins has been receiving an increased load of snaps at left guard in recent
days. If Awosika ended up beating out Slaughter, then the latter was set to be the backup at both guard and center. Now, the team essentially lost a backup at both spots along with their starter at the pivot.
To make sure an injury to Awosika doesn’t sink the ship any further, Pipkins has seemingly been chosen as the backup left guard and he needs a crash course at the position ahead of the regular season. That’s why it seems like he’s almost overtaken Awosika at left guard for no reason at all. The Chargers are confident in Awosika and right now, it’s Pipkins who needs those snaps.
So while it looked odd at first, this scenario isn’t anything to be super worried about.
