The College Football Rankings debuted tonight. And predictably, they stirred up quite a bit of controversy.
There’s no doubt the SEC’s lobbying this offseason made a positive impact for them, as 10 of their teams were ranked in this week’s edition.
Closer to home, all eyes were on which Group of 6 team would be selected, where they’d rank, and whether there would be multiple G6 teams.
All of those questions were answered tonight, although some of those answers were less than ideal.
If the College Football
Playoff started today, Boise State would be the Group of 6 representative, as they were the highest-ranked G6 team.
However, they were ranked 25th, a few spots lower than their rankings in the Coaches and AP Polls.
Ranking the Broncos 25th, behind two three-loss teams, sends a clear message. Group of 6 teams should just be thankful to be included at all. And also, it’s most likely a protective measure to ensure they don’t rise too high over the next few weeks and accidentally get a first-round bye or home game, like they did two years ago.
Obviously, Boise State would be a huge underdog and, at this point, be the 12-seed, which would match them up with Alabama. According to FanDuel, Boise State is a long shot to win the national championship at +25000.
Also of note, they were the only mid-major team to debut in the rankings. There was some discussion about whether New Mexico would also be featured after they cracked the top 25 in the AP poll this week, their first ranking in program history.
