Lost in all of the excitement around the start of the football season is the fact that Niko Medved is hosting three highly ranked recruits this weekend. It is not often that three out-of-state recruits who are top 150 caliber recruits are coming on official visits together. And by “not often,” I mean it never happens.
Who is coming? How do they fit? Will they commit?
PF – Quinn Costello Size: 6’10”, 195 From: Boston, The Newman School Competition: Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, North Carolina, Texas
This four-star power forward has a significant offer list and ranks as the 70th best player in the class. Those are some significant names to be up against, but it sounds like Costello sees himself as a great fit in the new Gopher offense and realizes this might be a good choice for him.
Per Ryan James of GopherIllustrated…
“They’re an awesome fit for me offensively. They have one of the top offenses in the country and really value what I bring. They’re an awesome option.”
SG – Lucas Morillo
Size: 6’6”, 180
From: Boston, The Newman School
Competition: Marquette, Virginia, Texas
A teammate of Costello, Morillo is also making an official visit for tonight’s game. Morillo is a newer name on the radar of Gopher recruits, and he would be a great fit in the backcourt with his length and shooting ability. He ranks right around 60th nationally and is the 11th-best SG in the country.
C – Chadrack Mpoyi
Size: 6’10”, 245
From: Irvine, CA
Competition: Cal, Utah, UC-Santa Barbara and other mid-majors
This big man has been a priority for Medved and staff. If Mpoyi is willing to head this far east from his home state, I think the Gophers are in a great position to land Mpoyi as their future center.
SF – Nolen Anderson
Size: 6’6”, 180
From: Wayzata
Competition: none, he’s committed to Minnesota
Last, but not to be forgotten is Nolen Anderson, who will also be at tonight’s football game. He is going to be a Gopher, he will be a great fit and his role now shifts to helping the staff recruit the other names above him on this list.
This is a very exciting list of players coming to campus this week. Here’s hoping they connect with the staff and players, they have a great time at the football game and they fall in love with the idea of playing as Golden Gophers.
