We’re back with another daily question, and today’s is a look ahead at spring training.
The Brewers have brought back a roster filled with returning players, but inevitably, there will be some surprises, whether that comes in the form of performance on the field, injuries, or something else entirely. Last year, it was Vinny Capra winning the third base job (alongside Oliver Dunn) with a strong spring, though that didn’t last very long into the season.
While the starting lineup seems mostly set, there
are still some battles to watch. Joey Ortiz had a rough season at the plate, and while the team is clearly still high on him, particularly for his defense, I can’t see Pat Murphy, Matt Arnold, and Co. being alright with an everyday player with a sub-.600 OPS. Can Jett Williams surprise this spring? Will Andruw Monasterio or Anthony Seigler take steps forward this year?
The other key battles to watch are backup catcher (Reese McGuire & Jeferson Quero are the frontrunners), depth outfielders (behind Jackson Chourio & Sal Frelick, virtually nothing is guaranteed), and the pitching staff, which is always a key area. With Freddy Peralta out of the picture, who steps up in the rotation? What about the bullpen?
