It’s like a new signing! Tottenham Hotspur central defender Micky van de Ven has committed his immediate future to Spurs by signing a new contract! According to multiple sources, the deal is for five additional years, through the 2030-31 season, with a potential option for a sixth year.
While the release doesn’t mention it, we should also presume that Micky’s new contract contains a healthy
bump in wages as well. On his initial Tottenham contract, Micky was reportedly making about £66k/week; previous reports ahead of today’s announcement suggested that his new deal would put him among the highest earners at the club, so we should probably be thinking about him now making Sandro Tonali Money™.
This is a HUGE deal. It wasn’t difficult to read Micky’s body language last season during the Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor debacles, and I think most Spurs fans were becoming resigned to the idea that Micky might attempt to force his way out of the club if things didn’t change. Thankfully, things HAVE changed under Roberto De Zerbi; Micky has been on the record not only talking about how much he appreciates working for and under De Zerbi, but also essentially “subtweeting” his dissatisfaction under Thomas Frank. With this new deal, Van de Ven is establishing himself as a clubhouse leader and a rock in the back line for Spurs. He’s now happy, committed, and getting paid bank at Spurs, and he deserves it. It’s a sign that, at least from his perspective, Tottenham is back on the right track after derailing last season. Long may that continue.
