Bayern Munich supervisory board member Uli Hoeneß is worried about Jamal Musiala and his admission that he is dealing with his “neurological absence” condition that has caused him to collapse in the team’s last two preseason friendlies.
“The fact it happened again four days later really shocked me. I was speechless, which rarely happens to me. I go to bed thinking of him and wake up in the morning thinking of him. We support Jamal unconditionally,” Hoeneß told RTL (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “We’ve
already been informed about the problems for quite a long time. But it happened on the pitch for the first time against Leipzig last week.. I thought: well, if it doesn’t happen soon again, then the medication will help. But the fact it happened again four days later really shocked me. I was sat on the couch speechless.
“It’s a drama, especially for Jamal. There were some signs of the problems, but it had never happened to him at the club before. But now with the two incidents on Saturday and yesterday, it’s a problem first and foremost for the person Jamal, and also for the club in the medium term. We’re all speechless, we weren’t prepared for this. We’ll have to learn how to deal with the situation.”
Interestingly, Hoeneß said that the club did not have all of the information surrounding Musiala’s condition.
“We weren’t informed clearly. There were some signs, but he was training, he played games. But I don’t know whether these problems affected his performances, or whether it was his ankle problems. Our opinion was that after the World Cup, a new era starts for Jamal, with a good preseason. And now the fact this happened in his first game back shocked us,” said.
This is — undoubtedly — a complex situation. Musiala is a foundational piece for the club and the the team’s highest paid player for this season per Capology, but this an odd spot for everyone to be in. Can the club continue to play Musiala knowing that he might need to be subbed out after a brief period? How will this impact other players on the pitch?
Truly, there are no easy answers that this point, especially as the primary focus is on getting Musiala back to full health.
