Brock Purdy has had a phenomenal start to the season. While he hasn’t played faultless football, the 49ers quarterback clearly has taken his game to another level and, after key playmaking in a thrilling road win over the Seattle Seahawks, now leadsthe MVP race.
Purdy leads the NFL in passing touchdowns (13), success rate (57.9%), and QBR (85.5), while he is tied for first with Lamar Jackson in adjusted EPA per play.
Though recent matchups with the Denver Broncos and the Seahawks presented Purdy with more
issues than he faced over the opening three weeks, Purdy has been a picture of consistency through five games, and has the chance for a history-making streak when the 49ers host the Washington Commanders on Monday Night Football to round off Week 6.
Purdy has multiple touchdowns and a passer rating of at least 90 in all five of his games so far this season.
Should he continue that run against Washington, he will become the only player in NFL history within their first five career seasons to record multiple touchdown passes and a passer rating of 90 or higher in their team’s first six games of a season.
Against a Washington defense that ranks 23rd in EPA per play and 25th in dropback EPA per play, the signs point to another profitable game for Purdy.
One concern for San Francisco is the injuries that continue to afflict the wide receiver position, with Deebo Samuel set to miss his reunion with the Commanders with a hamstring injury.
However, with Mike Evans in devastatingly effective form and tight end George Kittle hopefully free of the illness he battled through in Seattle, the hope will be that the 49ers’ weaponry is more than sufficient for Purdy to capture that piece of history and, more importantly, help deliver San Francisco’s sixth straight win.
