The last time Mexico Women’s National Team participated in a World Cup was in 2015 where they failed to make it out of the group stage. They then failed to qualify for the 2019 and 2023 World Cups and would not want to miss out on a third consecutive World Cup. These qualifiers will be their first test on this journey and Mexico should not have a problem qualifying. Speaking historically, Mexico has not had any issues with these opponents in the past and shouldn’t have issues when they come face to face in November, February and April 2026. Their biggest issue will be their own coach Pedro Lopez.
Pedro Lopez was named the head coach for the Mexican Women’s National Team in 2022 and three years later there’s a lot more doubts and questions than hope. Lopez had come from leading Spain’s U-20 Women’s National Team to a World Cup in 2022, their first. With the announcement came a lot of hope and excitement as this meant Mexico was going to be coached by someone who won a major youth tournament. Spain has one of the most talented youth teams and he helped them win a World Cup. At first it all started well but now fans question his choices and if he really is the one to lead the nation. The best performance Mexico has recently put on was back in 2024 during the Gold Cup when they defeated the U.S. 2-0 in the group stage. Not only did Mexico win, but they dominated over their Northern neighbors. The match after is when it all fell apart. Lopez decided to dismantle the lineup that won that game which baffled fans. Why would a coach change a lineup that was successful? Why fix something that isn’t broken? Since then Mexico hasn’t found their footing. Yes, they win their friendlies, but on the field they don’t look like they have a plan. Usually within minutes one can see what a team’s plan is but not with Mexico. Lopez probably doesn’t even know. He also doesn’t play the best players and makes questionable call-ups. For a coach who won a major youth tournament, this is not the Mexico fans expected. A spot in the W Championship should be little to no issue, but the problems will be evident as they try to qualify for the World Cup after a 12 year absence.
