Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs has been named the Week 5 NFC Offensive Player of the Week for the 2026 season. The honor comes after Gibbs rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns and caught five passes for an additional 56 yards against the Arizona Cardinals. His output helped the Lions cruise to a 45-21 victory, leading Detroit to a 3-2 record into their bye week.
This is the fourth time Gibbs has been named NFC Offensive Player of the Week. He had the honors twice last year and once in
2024. The only Lions running back to clear four Player of the Week honors is Barry Sanders (11 times).
For the season, Gibbs ranks among the best running backs in several categories. He’s fourth in rushing yards (504), t-first in rushing touchdowns (7), first in receiving yards (243), t-first in receiving touchdowns (2), and first in yards from scrimmage (747).
Beyond all the efficiency with the ball in his hands, Lions coach Dan Campbell praised Gibbs’ growth in pass protection this week.
“I hit him up this morning. I said, ‘One of my favorite clips of everything you did’—he had a ton of eye-opening plays—’was his protection rep on the fourth-and-1, (Sam) LaPorta’s touchdown,’” Campbell said. “That was outstanding. And to me, that’s why he’s different. All this other stuff, of course he’s got that and it’s rare. It’s that. He’s unselfish and he’s tough and he’s willing to do anything for his teammates.”
On Sunday, Gibbs also set an NFL record that he may put out of reach. He surpassed Barry Sanders for most scrimmage touchdowns (57) from a player under 25 years old. Considering Gibbs won’t turn 25 until the end of the season, he is almost certainly going to create some distance by the end of the year.
