Ever since Thomas Müller moved to the Vancouver Whitecaps, fans have pundits have treated his return to Bayern Munich as a foregone conclusion. Most expect the 36-year-old to take up a management position at the club, in the vein of Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
In an interview with Bild (via @iMiaSanMia), the player himself was a bit more equivocal about his future.
“In the long term, I’m not ruling anything out,” said Müller. “But I can’t imagine that becoming relevant anytime soon. You can’t just
casually land a leadership position at FC Bayern. As Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge rightly pointed out, you have to prepare intensively, gain diverse experience beforehand, and then deliver. I want to learn new things and then prepare myself as best as possible for my professional future. But we’re not there yet.”
“This move [to Vancouver] has helped me develop further as a person. I’m experiencing how differently people think and behave in other countries. Vancouver is a melting pot of international people and cultures. Another important point for me is the language. My English has improved significantly. That might come in handy later on – for example, if you ever want to poach a player from a Premier League club [laughs].”
It makes sense for Müller, who spent his entire career at Bayern Munich, to look for experiences elsewhere before taking up a post-playing career. Fans will likely have to wait a little longer to see him back on the sidelines.
