With just one remaining preseason game left to play against New Orleans Saints, the cutdown date for the Dallas Cowboys and the rest of the league to get under the 53-man roster is quickly approaching. That means tough decisions will have to be made about who receives a pink slip or which players could potentially become trade candidates. Today, we’ll take a look at a handful of players that Dallas could possibly trade away.
LB Marist Liufau
Dallas’ third-round pick in 2024 has gone from playing like a future starter
as a rookie to quickly falling out of favor in just a few years time. He currently looks like a man without a position after being switched outside linebacker. His best bet to make it through roster cuts is his special teams ability, but even that may not be enough. While his value in Dallas has continued to nosedive, another team looking for LB help may think otherwise. If true, the Cowboys would be happy to receive a future late-round pick instead of cutting him.
TE Luke Schoonmaker
After losing the TE2 job to Brevyn Spann-Ford, Schoonmaker’s tumble down the depth chart looked inevitable with the emergence of Michael Trigg, but may be stalled/delayed for now. Trigg’s toe injury may get him stashed on IR in order to secure his services, saving Schoonmaker’s job. That doesn’t mean the Cowboys won’t or shouldn’t shop him though. He’s in the final year of his rookie deal with someone waiting in the wings to replace him. Maybe someone will part with a future pick on the former second-round TE.
WR Camden Brown
Would the Cowboys really part with a young, promising WR on a very team-friendly contract? For the right price, sure. Brown joined the Cowboys in an undrafted free agent, but has since put his name on the map with his performance in training camp and especially in preseason. Being buried on the depth chart he may not play much as a rookie even if he makes the roster, but could be part of the future depending on what happens with George Pickens. A future pick probably wouldn’t do it, but a player who would upgrade things elsewhere on the roster could possibly sway the Cowboys.
OL T.J. Bass
Bass is probably a starter on many team’s around the league, but with the Cowboys he is a depth piece, albeit an important one. He seems to be the contingency plan to start at guard if the Cowboys have nay issues there. Outside that, he’s just another backup who won’t see the field much. If the Cowboys like what they see and second-year OL Ajani Cornelius or maybe even Nick Leverett, trading Bass away could net them a future mid-round pick. Playing on a one-year deal it’s worth considering.
QB Joe Milton
The talent was always there, but it looks as if Milton has finally started to come into his own. So much so, he’s been playing like a future starter in preseason and QB-needy teams around the league have probably taken notice. With Sam Howell as a capable QB2, Dallas may want to try to strike while the iron is hot. Milton could potentially fetch a mid-round pick, which would be an improvement on the sixth-rounder they sent to the Patriots to acquire him in the first place. Trading away such talent would be hard, but potentially worth it.
