Unfortunately, the Michigan Wolverines did not get the win on the road last weekend in Norman, losing to Oklahoma, 24-13. For the Wolverines, it was a game full of learning opportunities; a new offensive coordinator and a freshman quarterback has its fair share of challenges. On the defensive side of the ball, we’re hoping to see a more dominant performance from the defensive line and some better coverage from the secondary.
But it wasn’t all bad against the Sooners. Here are five plays from last
weekend to get you hyped for Michigan’s game against Central Michigan on Saturday.
RB Justice Haynes’ 75-yard touchdown run
Critique Michigan’s run game against Oklahoma all you want, but this 75-yard touchdown run by Justice Haynes is one of the top highlights from Saturday. He found the space he needed and outran the remaining defenders. Through two games, Haynes has already shown the ability to make those explosive plays Chip Lindsey likes to talk about.
DB TJ Metcalf’s INT
Honestly, it was the turnovers in this one that had us holding onto hope that maybe, just maybe, the Wolverines could find a way to get the W. The Sooners put together a solid drive to start the game, but near the end of the first quarter, TJ Metcalf found a way to get the offense back on the field. While Mateer’s pass sailed high, it was still a nice play from Metcalf to secure the interception.
LB Cole Sullivan recovers the muffed punt
Linebacker Cole Sullivan is showing us why the coaches talk about him so much. He’s had two impressive games this season and came up big on special teams for the Wolverines with the fumble recovery on a punt return int he third quarter. It’s unfortunate the offense couldn’t get into the end zone because Sullivan gave the team great field position.
WR Donaven McCulley’s over-the-helmet catch
It’s just a matter of time before Bryce Underwood and Donaven McCulley get on the same page for an entire game. Let’s have some patience as the true freshman works to build rapport with his receivers. This catch was a great effort by McCulley, and we’re hoping to see some bigger plays from the receivers, especially against Central Michigan on Saturday.
LB Jaishawn Barham’s tackle in the fourth quarter
This one might be a bit obscure, but the effort from Jaishawn Barham at the end of the game is worth celebrating. While the field goal on the next play seemed to put the game out of reach for Michigan, it’s still encouraging to see Barham make the tackle to force the kick. There’s a long season ahead for this team, and this play at the end still showed that fight in the defense, even if they had a rough go on the drive.
