Today would be a good day to beat the Yankees
I have planned my Saturdays around the 3:00 Eastern starts that the Jays use for their home games. Of course, the Godless Yankees start at 1:00 Eastern, which messes me up. So the GameThread is missing the lineups today.
Sad to hear of Ken Dryden’s passing. He was the goalie when I was young.
My Dad hated the Canadians, so, of course, my brother and I loved them. My dad hated them more than I hate the Yankees. But he had a grudging respect for Ken Dryden.
And then he had to cheer for Dryden during the Canada/Russia series.
When I was that age, I didn’t understand why you wouldn’t cheer for the Habs. What was the choice? Cheer for the Leafs and develop a drinking problem, or cheer for the Habs and get a parade every spring.
I liked Dryden’s books about his hockey life and how he felt he didn’t quite fit in with his teammates, whether that was a goalie thing or maybe that he wasn’t your usual hockey player. He left the game to become a lawyer and then a senator. And a very vocal Canadian.
