This afternoon, Virginia Cavaliers head basketball coach Ryan Odom met with the media as part of his preseason availability to provide updates on the team and offer progress reports on specific players. He touched on Dallin Hall’s leadership, praising him by saying, “there’s just a trust there,” and added that Malik Thomas, Devin Tillis, and Thijs DeRidder will also be tasked with leadership roles due to their experience.
Most notably, however, is how the self-proclaimed “gear guy” mentioned that
there will be three additional alternate uniforms for the upcoming season for the Virginia Cavaliers. Odom touched on how he has little to no say in what Nike Elite jerseys are provided/designed by Nike; Virginia will wear those and has to wear them as they are Nike Elite.
But he did announce that the ‘Hoos will sport three new alternate uniforms in the coming season.
He would not reveal any information on the new uniforms, but he confirmed there will be some sort of “reveal” once they arrive.
So, for the next month or so, we will have to speculate on the design, and if the new practice uniforms tell us anything, it’s that there will be more orange in these alternates. We could see a nod to an era of the past, perhaps the Ralph Sampson era.
Why? I will pull a card out of Coach Odom’s playbook and say that I can’t tell you. I’ll give you a hint, however, take a look at Odom’s sweatshirt he wore today at the press conference. We have seen this font resurface again, and I get the feeling that the “gear guy” is a fan of the look, and we know, as a fact, that he has a fond memory of the Sampson days. Why not?
